Knives, Leather & a big Red Snapper- the birth of a slightly stunning wallet.

I run a small custom apparel and leathercraft shop out of Groton, MA. A few years ago I taught myself screenprinting from scratch, figured it out, and built a small business around it. Then I got interested in leather. Taught myself that too. Started making all kinds of products from all kinds of leathers. Got to the point where I could build just about anything.

Then I built a wallet.

I wanted it to be simple, rugged and comfortable. I wanted it to be at home in the boardroom or at the bonfire. So I started with the thickest skirting leather I had in the shop. Why not? I cut a design. and then just kept cutting.

Whatever wasn't needed got tossed overboard.

Corners? Gone. Stitching? Gone.

I hand finished the natural leather to give it character and a base patina. Lasered and stamped it to make it mine. Added some screws and a snap to lock everything down.

It looked sharp- felt great in my hand and disappeared in my pocket. While testing it one week, I went for a run and forgot it was there. Perfect.

Today, I make a few different versions of that original design- all are made from premium materials one at a time right here in Groton, Massachusetts.

As for the name — it goes back to a deep sea fishing trip I took as a kid down in Fort Pierce, Florida. The boat mascot was called Capt. Snappy. I caught a 30-pound red snapper, got a sweet t-shirt, and never forgot either. When I was thinking of names for the wallet, it came back to me immediately. It fits: a little irreverent, a little nautical, and there's an actual snap on every wallet. Seemed right.
